This carrot’s beautiful red-purple exterior provides a striking contrast to its yellow-orange interior and light yellow core. A treat for the eye when sliced, its sweet, almost spicy, flavour makes this carrot a home gardener’s favorite. Considered the most refined purple carrot available. Danvers carrots were developed in the 1870s in Danvers, Massachusetts. It became a popular seed due to the root’s deep orange color and rich flavor. This variety does better than many popular carrots because it forms nice roots even in heavy, shallow soils. Purple Dragon carrots are considered to be very hardy and tend to do best in cooler northern regions.

 Sowing

Sow seeds 5-10 mm deep when soil is at least 8 C. Sow seeds at 5 days intervals over several weeks for fresh eating. Thin to 5 cm apart.

Germination Instructions

Direct sow into well prepared, light well-drained soil that is stone free. Carrots do not like manured soils so beds are best prepared during the previous autumn. Rake in a general-purpose fertilizer 1-2 weeks before sowing. Sow very thinly 10mm deep in drills 30cm apart. Water until germination occurs. Germination takes 10-20 days. When large enough to handle thin to 10cm spacing.

Growing Instructions

Water only to keep the soil moist, excessive water encourages leaf, not root growth. Earth up around growing carrots to prevent green crowns. Carrot fly can be a problem, if so cover with fleece or fine netting.

Cultivation Instructions

Pull a single carrot first to check the size. If soil is dry water before lifting as this will make it easier. Use a fork to lift roots. Damaged roots should be used immediately or discarded. Sound roots can be stored. Cut leaves to 2cm and store in layers of sand, carrots should not touch each other during storage.
