Asparagus lettuce consists of a tuft of dark green leaves resembling Romaine lettuce atop a long thick stem. The leaves and stem are both edible, but are usually prepared in different ways. The outer leaves are relatively tough and bitter, and they are often discarded. The mild-tasting leaves at the tip of the asparagus lettuce look and taste like lettuce. When eating it raw, the stem has crunchiness, juiciness, and a spicy flavor similar to celery; but it is milder and more delicate. When cooked, the stem tastes more like asparagus than celery.

Lemongrass is a tropical plant from the grass family (Poaceae) that will grow well in temperate regions if given the right conditions. Sow Lemongrass seeds indoors in late winter using bottom heat or a seedling heat mat. Maintain moist conditions and a temperature around 21°C (70°F), and the seeds will germinate in 5 to 21 days. Be sure to use sterilized seed starting mix, and either a clear dome over your seedling tray, or sealed into a plastic bag to maintain moisture. Transplant outdoors or into containers in full sun once the weather has warmed up in early summer. At the end of summer move container plants into a frost-free environment with good air circulation. Reduce watering to almost none, making the soil barely moist once a week. When using Lemongrass in the kitchen, remove any loose, outer layers. Either use whole pieces, crushed slightly with a pestle or under the back of your cleaver, or slice sections very thinly in cross-section. This will help break up the strong fibres of the grass stalks.

    Noteworthy Characteristics

Yucca filamentosa, commonly called Adam’s needle, Spanish bayonet, yucca and needle palm, is a virtually stemless broadleaf evergreen shrub (though it looks more like a perennial than a shrub) that is native to beaches, sand dunes and fields from South Carolina south to Florida and Mississippi. It has escaped cultivation and extended its original range north into New England. It features a basal rosette of rigid, sword-shaped, spine-tipped green leaves (to 30” long and to 4” wide) with long filamentous (as per specific epithet) curly threads along the margins. Leaves form a foliage clump to 2-3’ tall. In late spring, a flowering stalk rises from the center of each rosette, typically to 5-8’ tall, but infrequently to 12’ tall, bearing a long terminal panicles of nodding bell-shaped creamy white flowers. Fruits are elliptical dehiscent capsules. Will form a small colony over time from basal offsets. Genus name comes from the Carbi name for manihot, also called cassava or yuca, which is not closely related but has similarly enlarged root structures. Specific epithet means with filaments or threads.
