This main crop pea variety has been used by gardeners from coast to coast for more than 100 years.     For bean lovers everywhere, this wax bush bean has an outstanding flavour, although we found that they take a bit longer to cook than other fresh beans, they quickly became a favourite. This charming wax bush bean is an old heirloom from Europe. It has yellow-green pods that are streaked and mottled with a gorgeous purple. Plants grow to be between 60-75 cm tall in a bush growth habit. The flavour of the pods is excellent and a must-try! This bean can be harvested as a green bean when pods are crisp or left to mature further and harvested as a shelling bean. The seeds are a mottled brown and very tasty. These pods are versatile both in their use, and their unique colouring. They can be used either fresh or as dried beans, and there is no other variety with coloring quite like theirs.

    The tendergreen variety of bean produces abundant yields of 12-18 cm pods. Tendergreens are resistant to common bean mosaic. This is a bush type bean plant, so it can grow independent of a pole or support. This plant is best suited for a more advanced gardener, as the window for harvesting is rather short, about two weeks. It is beneficial to sow a few different plants about ten days apart. These plants pay off well, with tender and delicious green pods with a mild and delicious taste. This is a great main crop variety for gardeners who enjoy freezing and canning.

    These seeds can be sown indoors by placing them two inches deep in potted soil, and transplanted outside after seven to ten weeks, when the threat of frost has passed. Conversely, you may sow them directly outdoors by placing them 5 cm deep in the soil, 22-25 inches apart, and with 45 cm between rows. Because these seeds will grow in a vine, they will need a support trellis, such as a cane or frame. It is best for the roots to put your frame in place when you plant as these vines grow quickly. Regular watering is required, and these vines will grow to impressive lengths in a relatively brief period of time. 3-4 Meter vines are covered in attractive red blossoms borne in clusters. The more you pick, the more they produce. Most should bear pods from late July and harvest can continue until the first frosts, or longer if plants are protected. Beans are at their best when fresh, young, and tender. They should be harvested when the pods are thin, snap easily, and while the seeds are still small and pale in colour. Picking green beans often help to promote more growth and increase yields. As the pods get older they develop string and the pod-walls become more fibrous, with pronounced bumps on the surface indicating that the seeds are enlarging and that moisture is going into the seed from the pod.

    Admires bean is a dwarf, medium early variety that produces stringless, green, broad pods reaching 15 cm in length. They strike with their excellent taste and tenderness. White seeds that contain large amounts of proteins, carbohydrates, and B vitamins are hidden within the pods. The best European bush slicing bean! Superior in taste and yields. Produces flat beans which are 15 cm long and 2.5 cm wide. This is an early healthy variety.

    Start by sowing the seeds one to two inches deep, with a space of three to four inches between plants. The use of a low tunnel for the first month of growing (Until June 20th) will help in the production of these lovely tender beans. The Yard Long can tolerate acidic soils and will require full sun. Water them often so that they don’t wilt in the sun. Due to the nature of a vine, support, such as a trellis, will be needed. Pods grow long and slightly heavy, so they will need strong support. The pods take two to three months to reach maturity, at which point they should be anywhere from 25-80 cm long. you will want to start picking them when they are 20-25 cm long.  Once pods begin to reach this size, they should be harvested each day to encourage production on the vine.

    This bean needs a longer growing period so start these indoors in mid-May to early-June. These are ancient Asian legumes, commonly grown as a pulse or dried bean but also sometimes used fresh. They have been cultivated for centuries in China and Japan as well as other countries in the East. The plant itself grows 30-60 cm in height, producing yellow flowers followed by clusters of pods. Young tender pods can be picked early and used much as you would use snap peas. These beans are excellent for container growing but they enrich the soil significantly so you may want to sow them outdoors in beds or your main garden area. Adzuki beans are linked to several health benefits, ranging from heart health and weight loss to improved digestion and a lower risk of diabetes. An average plant can produce up to 120 pods.

    The best bean to try in 2021. Unlike most beans, fava beans prefer cool weather and are best planted in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Sow 2.5 cm deep, 10-12 cm apart, in rows 40-90 cm apart or use wide-bed style planting, giving each plant 25 sq.cm of space. Vroma produces large, 15-18 cm pods with 4–5 large seeds. Cook like a shell bean when the seeds are pale green or wait until pods are dry for shelled beans. Strong, heat-tolerant plants resist lodging. Light brown seeds.     Growing on an upright bush, bright yellow, stringless pods of 10-15 cm are easy to spot among green foliage. Delicious buttery flavour.  When planted in full sun they are prolific producers reaching a height of 37-50 cm tall and spread 37-50 cm.    
  • Stunning, brightly-colored spikes create a strong feature in the early summer garden. Its pea-like flowers grow in dense spires. Scatter through cottage or wildflower gardens or mass plant in the border. Purple, deep blue, red, pink, yellow, cream, and white. Lupins prefer a full sun position but will also grow well in semi-shade, they do not grow well in full shade. They grow well in a wide variety of soil conditions although chalky and/or waterlogged soil will be a problem if not improved before planting. If the ground is clay, lots of compost dug into the planting area will greatly increase their chances of surviving winters. Once your Lupins start to flower create new plants if you want more of a certain colour, gently separate the little offset at the base of a mature plant and replant it.

White Spear parsnip is the best choice for early spring planting and harvesting in early summer. Parsnip may be covered with mulch and left in the ground for winter harvest or until the following season for seed collection.

Mature 90 days from transplant. Brussels sprouts are members of the cabbage family. This hardy, cool-season vegetable requires temperatures below 70 degrees Fahrenheit to produce good-quality, flavorful sprouts. In mild, Mediterranean climates, plant spouts during the months of June through September for a late fall or winter harvest. The Brussels sprout plant is grown as an annual vegetable, although it is a biennial. Growing upright, the sprouts develop along the stalk of the plant in the leaf axils.

    The sprouts are a bit smaller than green Brussel sprouts, but they’re much sweeter. Resembling a combination between the purple sprouting broccoli and the standard Brussel sprout, this new variety pleases both the eye and the palate with small, sweet sprouts and a crimson red colour that deepens as the seasons change and the frosts come on.  The leaves are good to eat too. In fact, both the sprouts and the leaves are sweet enough to be used raw in salads, but also taste lovely steamed or braised. Use a row cover and frost cloth for winter harvesting. If covered you can let the Brussel sprouts flower the following season to harvest seeds.
