Spearmint came to North America with the Colonists. They used mint teas medicinally for headaches, indigestion and to help them sleep. Mint is also an excellent culinary addition and makes a great tea for the pure pleasure of it. As a general rule, mint family plants root vigorously when allowed to grow freely and can be invasive. Many gardeners grow them in containers to keep them in check.

Spearmint herb is used to make mint jellies and sauces and of course, tea! Spearmint also has medicinal benefits as well. It is a wonderful addition for the garden that can easily be started with Spearmint herb seeds.

This perennial grows to 90 cm tall and spreads rapidly to indefinite widths. The 5-8 cm lance-shaped leaves have a unique wrinkled texture, separating it from other mint plants. Oblong terminal spikes of lavender-pink flowers appear all summer  Spearmint plants are extremely easy to grow. In fact, they grow so well, it is best to confine them to containers.

Start Spearmint seeds indoors 8 – 10 weeks prior to last spring frost or sow herb seeds directly outdoors in partially shaded, moist, soil. Sow the herb seeds only 5 mm deep in loose soil. Transplant the Spearmint seedlings when they reach 5 cm tall. Harvest leaves when the Spearmint herb plant reaches 25 cm tall. Pick the larger outside leaves as the plant grows to encourage more leaf growth. Young leaves and stems have the best flavor. Dry mint leaves on trays or by hanging bunched branches upside down in a warm, dark, well-ventilated area. Fresh leaves are easy to freeze too.

Uniquely spearmint plants each have a unique flavour, with some plants being sweeter and more pungent than others. Choose from the plant which best suits your taste and remove all other plants. The “winner” can be propagated by root cuttings.
