Excellent taste, 3.5 - 6.5 kg (7.5 - 14.5 lbs.), light green, whitish green exterior, light pinkish-red flesh inside, nice flavor, low sugar brix of 9.5-10.5, excellent diabetic watermelon, ripe when tendril closest to stem turns dry, color on the bottom of melon matches the top. Will split if overripe, but flesh at this point is still firm & tasty. Does best in cooler climates, excessive summer heat tends to kill the melon leaves. Melon does better in poorer, marginal soil. • This is an old Japanese heirloom, cultivated for hundreds of years. Futtsu Black Early squash forms decorative and tasteful pumpkin-like fruits of medium size. A typical fruit from this unusual and highly prized squash weighs around 1.5kg (3 lbs). The fruits start out round and dark green — almost black — with deep ribs and some wrinkles. As they mature the fruits turn dusky grey-brown, and the nutty flavour and sweetness really improve. Cutting into this remarkable fruit releases a strong scent of cantaloupe. The squash will keep for months in storage. Plants grow 80-140cm (32-55") wide, so provide lots of space as well as fertile soil. The fruits are eminently decorative for fall displays.

Heirloom from Italy. Celeriac seeds are easy to grow and harvest. The big white root has few external markings and grows vigorously. Flavour hovers between a mild celery and parsley and it has the consistency of a potato. Celeriac is surprisingly versatile and makes a fantastic puree that matches well with other root vegetables. Or try dicing some and adding to winter soups. Add some to stir-fries, or sliced thin in a scalloped or gratin dish. Try cutting some raw celeriac thinly into matchsticks or small cubes, and pickling them in some sweet vinegar. The firm texture of pickled celeriac adds crunch and a bright flavour to salads and stews.
